PRLog (Press Release)– Mar 29, 2011– A new report by the Confederation of British Industry describes changes in labeling as a 'win win for businesses and consumers' and one that will help the UK meet its carbon reduction targets. The CBI report Buying into it: making the consumer case for low carbon is backed by detailed national research conducted by IPSOS Mori, which included detailed face to face interviews aimed at understanding the subtlety of consumer attitudes in this much debated area. The report highlights the 'vicious circle' that many businesses find themselves in as they struggle to invest in greener products and cleaner manufacturing processes in a harsh commercial environment in which consumers appear to value price over green credentials.

The report points to the success of the A-G energy efficiency labeling of large consumer items such as washing machines and fridge freezers, and recommends this should be rolled out to other consumer electricals, such as vacuum cleaners and audio-visual products. It suggests that clear labeling is a way for companies with less brand clout to unlock green sales remote control helicopter potential. Two key findings of the report emphasise the importance of labeling:

AppAssure’s Replay 4 Helps Nationwide Company Reduce Downtime from Five Days to 20 Minutes

, a provider of innovative backup and disaster recovery software for Windows Applications Servers, today announced that Brundage Bone Concrete Pumping, the largest concrete pumping company in the United States, reduced downtime from five days to 20 minutes after replacing Backup Exec with AppAssure's flagship backup & recovery product, Replay 4, at a fraction of the cost.

With offices in over 18 states and with major projects such as pumping concrete for Denver International Airport and countless bridges, skyscrapers, and even a shark tank, at any one time there are 40+ sites at which Brundage Bone has its pump trucks, its equipment, and its crews. As large as its concrete pouring jobs are, Brundage Bone nevertheless depends on a relatively small IT team with complicated infrastructure to keep its scheduling, accounting, payroll, and other applications running smoothly.

"Our pouring jobs can be in any of our locations at any one time," says Herb Thornton, Network Administrator for Brundage Bone. "The right pump has to be sent out for the right job with the right amount of labor. If we don't show up for a job because the server that hosts our scheduling application has failed or the data is lost somehow, there won't be a second chance."

Thornton knew that without a solid IT infrastructure, Brundage Bone was looking at a potential catastrophe. "All our locations were running Symantec Backup Exec and were backing up to tape," notes Thornton. "The existing tape drives did not have the capacity to back up the whole server, just the critical files. This enabled us to keep a nightly backup of our dispatching software, database, and other critical office documents, but there was no way to get at them unless the server was functional and operational. Although extremely slow, it did give us the ability to recover files from tape, but not any part of the server operating system. So my biggest fears have been that I would not be able to get a failed server at one of my branch locations up and running in a timely manner, or at all."

It tends to be rare for an IT expert to have the exact production server failure scenario take place with two different backup solutions used in each instance for an "apples to apples" comparison, but Thornton was one of the "lucky" few who had a front-row seat for two exact server failures at Brundage Bone: one before AppAssure's Replay 4, and one using Replay 4's backup and disaster recovery solution.

"My predecessor had a server fail at one of our remote locations while we were using Backup Exec," explains Thornton. "It involved him purchasing a new server, flying to that location and reinstalling everything from scratch and then performing the file backup from tape. That branch did not have access to the dispatching software for about five days. They ended up doing everything on paper during that time period, including the cash logs and work orders."

That was the nightmare scenario that kept Thornton up at night when he took over IT.

"A month after I had purchased Replay," says Thornton, "I ran into the same scenario as above. A server quit and refused to start up at one of my remote locations. I was able to take the latest snapshot and fire up a virtualized image of the server. I had the employees remote into their virtualized server and had them back up and dispatching within 20 minutes.  I then concentrated on doing a bare metal restore on another server. I was able to get the server restored to a different unit, test it and get it shipped to the location by the next day. They simply plugged the replacement server in at their location, I pushed the updated changes data back to the replacement server from the virtualized server and it was business as usual. I was able to do this without flying out and had no downtime."

While Replay quickly became Brundage Bone's backup and disaster recovery solution of choice, Thornton also found himself impressed by Replay's dedupe and compression features.

"I did an estimate of the amount of storage I would need when I purchased an NAS server to handle the snapshots," explains Thornton, "and I was estimating that I would need a minimum of 3 TB to handle all the snapshots before they were compressed. I have been running Replay on the new NAS server for four months now and I have yet to exceed 1 TB of storage space. If you look at the local storage summary on the Replay console, it's showing that I am only using 20% of the storage space, post-compression. That's amazing!"

To download a free 14-day Replay 4 trial, visit http://www.appassure.com.

Apple iPad 2 vs Motorola Xoom Review - Get a FREE Cheap iPad 2 or Xoom show you the ways!

PRLog (Press Release)– Mar 20, 2011– With the introduction of the iPad 2 on March 2nd and Motorola's XOOM tablet hitting the market in late February, the tablet wars are hitting their stride. It seems we see another XOOM ad every five minutes telling us we need to just 'grab it' and with the launch of the iPad 2 on March 11th, we're about to get inundated with a wave of Apple ads telling us this is another 'Year of the iPad'. But which tablet really is better? This article should lend some clarity.

There's really two main factors that one should consider when comparing the XOOM and iPad 2. There's the hardware specifications of the physical tablet and there's the usability that the software and apps lends the buyer. How you interpret the different factors really depends on how you view your tablet purchase and what kind of tech person you are.

Get a FREE Motorola Xoom - http://www.101freebie.com/tablet/motorola-xoom-review-ho ...

The iPad2 uses Apple's iOS operating system which is the same as used in the famous iPhone. The XOOM uses Android 3.0, also known as 'Honeycomb', a new tablet enhanced version of the Android software used in the Droid and so many other Android phones. Both operating systems offer a great, if not different user experience with Honeycomb perhaps a bit more complex and PC like offering more variation but the Apple iOS lauded for its simplicity and intuitiveness.

If one were to make their decision on the specs alone then clearly the Motorola XOOM comes out ahead. The Xoom features a 1280x800 resolution screen while the iPad 2 has a 1024x768 display. While the iPad 2 screen does offer wider viewing angles via its IPS technology in daily use the XOOM screen is still very nice so it shouldn't really be a deciding factor. On the other hand the higher resolution of the XOOM's screen allows for more screen real estate to work with and the widescreen 16:10 ratio of the XOOM makes for more accurate movie watching as compared to the iPad 2's squarer screen which shows black bars on the top and bottom when in widescreen mode.

Both the XOOM and iPad 2 offer dual core processors...the XOOM using the Nvidia Tegra2 and the iPad 2 using the new A5 that Apple designed. At this point the two tablets are pretty equal but it is the extras that start to show the XOOM pulling ahead. The XOOM offers stereo speakers built in, the iPad 2 mono. The XOOM has built-in HDMI for hi-def video out while the iPad2 requires an additional accessory cable for this. The XOOM also has a usb slot while the iPad2 has none. The cameras on the XOOM, both front and rear are of higher pixel count than the iPad2's.

Perhaps most importantly the XOOM offers 4G as a free upgrade while the iPad2 does not and has a non-removable 3G card. While the iPad 2 is slightly thinner and lighter than the XOOM, the difference in real world use is negligible. Will people really care whether something is 1.3 or 1.6 lbs? Will they care if it is a few millimeters thinner or thicker in daily use? Maybe for bragging rights but let's be honest. Most people will barely notice or even care in daily use.

But what about the Apps? This is where the iPad 2 has a clear and decisive advantage for now. With the iPad having been out for a year and developers having a chance to port over tens of thousands of Apps that were originally made for the iPhone, the iPad's selection of software dwarfs the XOOM's 100+ titles at start. But the XOOM does have one ace up its sleeve and that is the ability to use flash which Apple has shunned. The reality is that much of the multimedia on the web is done in Flash no matter what Steve Jobs says and by all accounts the browsing experience on the XOOM is superior to that on the iPad 2 because of the ability to see all this Flash content on the web.

So who wins? Which is better the XOOM or iPad 2? The answer depends on if your view is on the long-term or the short term and if you like expandability or simplicity. Clearly the XOOM offers more potential long term because of its generally higher specs and 4G. With the onslaught of Android tablets just beginning, this year developers will be flooding the Android Market with Apps and within the year there will be thousands available. It might take time to catch up with the iPad 2 but eventually it is almost inevitable simply because there are so many hardware manufacturers that will be selling Android tablets. The user base will demand tons of software that developers will only be too happy to produce and sell to them.

Superpad II Hammers Flytouch3, ZT-180 2, is New iPad 2 Wannabe King

PRLog (Press Release)– Mar 20, 2011– A few days ago I had the pleasure of getting a new Superpad II, not to be confused with the Superpad2 / Flytouch 3. The first thing you notice when you handle the Superpad II is the superior build quality of the casing and the plush buttons, compared to a ZT-180 1/2 and Flytouch3

The physical build quality of the Superpad II is instantly visible in comparison with the generic ZT-180 style Android tablet PC. I plan to do a Superpad 2 Versus ZT-180 2 comparison in the next few days, so keep a look out for that. for now though I want to focus on the features of the Superpad II and show you what it's got and what it's like to use.

Google Market and quickly installed the new edition of Angry Birds Seasons. Already being fairly addicted to Angry birds on the iPad I was interested to see how the 700 USD iPad would compare to Angry Birds on this 2.2 Froyo Tablet PC.

Straight away I was quite shocked at how fluid and smooth the fun little game was playing on the Superpad, and started imaging just how many iPad users could have saved themselves hundreds of bucks by not bothering to buy an iPad to get their "Angry Birds Seasons download". In a nutshell Angry Birds plays perfectly on the Superpad II, awesome!

Youtube Videos play fluidly as well. I have yet to test the built in GPS Navigation but I think it will be sound as well.

Other features of the Superpad II include:

Superpad II Hot Spots:

- Android 2.2 Froyo OS - Built-in GPS Navigator + GPS Antenna - Dual USB Slots / Single TF Card Slot - Dual USB Ports for plugging Keyboard Cases - Larger battery for extended usage time - Built in Youtube Application for browsing videos - Android Market Pre-installed - 1.3MP Web Camera

In a nutshell, the Superpad II is the best 10-inch android froyo tablet functionality wise and aesthetically.

New generation Mobile developer tool rolled out from the cloud for all

PRLog (Press Release)– Mar 09, 2011– With this kit, anyone with programming skills can easily develop and deploy smaller and bigger mobile applications without investing efforts in the architecture or wasting time with porting.

It is still one of the major challenges of mobility to create and roll out mobile solutions covering more than one platform, able to work in - at least- a similar way on the different platforms. The currently available development methods are either using native coding, which is expensive regarding resources, or use some framework that is XML based and thus cannot handle all the business logic necessary for a full-fledged solution. And on the top of it; it is demanding on the hardware level as well, since different development environment knowledge is necessary for each of the platforms (iPhone, Blackberry, Android, WP7, ….) not to mention the integration challenges in case the application required is some kind of Business application that must be connecting to some of the back-office systems.

So usually, the choice developers and business decision makers make is that they pinpoint 1 or 2 platforms and deploy their applications for the selected ones. Primary choice is usually iPhone, followed by Android and Blackberry. Based on many years of extended research and innovation, InfomatiX has generated one simple and radical approach for the developers and decision makers that is changing development approach for all platforms. With the newest 4.0 version of their mobile development kit 'Mobiaccess', they have created one platform that is actually a programming tool using .net like language and is running from the cloud. The developer has nothing to do, but create the code, compile it for the given platform and install it on mobile phones or post it to any app-store he selects.

"We have dreamed of Mobiaccess 4 as a completely platform independent, unique programming tool, competitive with any native code in performance, while giving the freedom of development in parallel. Mobiaccess 4 will be welcome by a wide range of developers, since it can easily help them with the back-office integration as well, this way simplifying all aspects of mobile development. In our concept, it also had to be very familiar to most of the developers, so we selected a language that is very close to .net. Also, since it is working from the cloud, developers do not have to worry about obtaining any kind of specific hardware or software; all is handled for them by our infrastructure." says Zoltán Mocsári, head of the development team. "It is a wonderful surprise even for us, how positively the market has reacted to our newest release. We have rolled out the product for beta testing in the beginning of the year, and developer firms and end users alike have joined our community asking for training, applications and strategic advice regarding Mobiaccess. We selected CEBIT for the official premier, but will be on tour for introducing the product for the remainder of the year, since we receive numerous invitations from exhibitions and conferences. It is fascinating to see how the growing number of our customers benefit from the utilization of Mobiaccess 4, selecting it as a perfect pillar to build their mobile strategy on."

Our strategy is to provide one single platform for all mobile solutions within an enterprise. Mobiaccess 4 gives and answers to all enterprise challenges, with secure communication, easy maintenance and rollout, continuous version upgrades and on-site deployment. We are putting great effort on creating solutions with quick delivery times as well as high return of investment on the solutions created by our tool.

InfomatiX Ltd. has been focusing on mobile development since 2002, based on its strong research and innovation.  First, we started with smaller local mobile applications. Later on, as selected partners for multinational companies, we put on the market regional mobile applications. Since 2005, we have been working on the Mobiaccess mobile development framework, focusing on mobilization projects around the globe. Both in2009 and 2010, we won Deloitte's "Technology Fast 50" award. We have professional experience in several sectors where mobility is a key challenge; including Oil, Healthcare and FMCG amongst others and luckily our solutions team is working around the clock for answering all kinds of requests from customers.

What can boutique law firms do to ease the workload?

PRLog (Press Release)– Mar 08, 2011– What Can Small Firms Do to Ease the Workload?

Boutique isn't a new word, but it's certainly becoming quite the fad in the legal profession. As the economy fails to resurrect itself, more and more lawyers are finding themselves in need of jobs – but instead of turning to the bigger firms that laid them off in the first place, they're creating their own in the form of small firms focused on niches in the market that are often overlooked.

Articles have been written about the advantages and disadvantages of moving from a big firm to a mid-sized, or even small, firm. People have weighed in on both sides, arguing over billing rates and opportunities. But it seems that the boutique firms are coming out ahead, regardless of what those in the bigger firms seem to be saying.

One of the arguments aimed at smaller firms is that lawyers no longer bill what they were billing when they worked in bigger firms. One article published on www.Law.com in early January 2010 quotes Charles Scibetta as saying, "Chaffetz Lindsey lawyers have been able to bill up to 20 percent to 30 percent less than they did at Clifford Chance." Clifford Chance is the law firm that the partners left to form Chaffetz Lindsey, a boutique firm operating out of New York.

The clients are pleased that they are able to retain high quality lawyers at a more reasonable price, but others feel as though the lawyers are selling themselves short by charging a fraction of what they used to bill per hour. Jay Shepherd, a columnist for the "Above the Law" blog, says in a February 16, 2011 post titled Small Firms, Big Lawyers: Have you gotten stupider?", "How do you think that makes them [the clients] feel? Most likely, it will make them feel like you were overcharging them before."

All of the rate cutting is a big gamble, but it pays off when clients who can't afford the big firms find a boutique they like and stick with it; the boutique firms may end up handling some huge settlements, especially with small businesses and other up-and-coming clients. But with bigger clients and bigger settlements come big organizational problems, especially when the boutique firms are adamant about staying small.

Coming from bigger firms, many of these lawyers are often used to mass-produced practice management software packages or are using software that doesn't allow them to modify their databases to reflect the new levels of personalization that their clients require.

Whether they're suddenly handling a multi-plaintiff personal injury cruise ship assault case or they've decided that their practice will focus on only areas related to racial discrimination in the workforce, lawyers need software to help them keep all case or matter related information organized. It's one way that they're able to bill at lower rates, keeping support staff to a minimum and still maintain integrity as a firm.

Denver-based Synaptec Software, Inc. is arguably a boutique software firm. It's been in business for thirty years, coming to life far before the most recent wave of boutique law firms, but it's been providing customizable case and matter management to firms of all sizes ever since its inception in 1981. Plenty of firms choose to use LawBase - their customized case management package - because of its flexibility. There's a certain amount of control that goes into the creation of the personalized database, and many firms can't find that level of customization with any other software package.

Similar to the boutique firms, Synaptec employs a very personal approach to their client relationships. President Phil Homburger asserts that maintaining strong client relationships is one of the things that has made LawBase so successful. LawBase enables lawyers to practice law instead of worrying about information management, leaving more time for billing rather than repetitive data entry. This increase in productivity allows LawBase clients to keep their support staff small and focused on the end goal rather than on the tiresome tasks that would have be done otherwise.

Perhaps the face time that lawyers are now spending with clients is enabling them to see the law and the justice system with fresh eyes, an outlook that is often beneficial for both client and lawyer. While the boutique law firm trend seems to have no end in sight, it is just as well for those clients hoping to get high quality lawyers at reasonable prices.

Why Bankruptcies Increase While Unemployment Rate Improves, Tacoma Bankruptcy Lawyer

PRLog (Press Release)– Mar 07, 2011– The U.S. unemployment rate has dropped to 8.9 percent, and Washington state's rate has decreased to 9 percent, which is good news for Seattle-Tacoma consumers. But bankruptcies continue to top the headlines –  the high number of bankruptcy filings is reflective of the stalled economy, according to Tacoma bankruptcy attorney Dave Yando.

"There is considerable hope and talk about an improving economy. Certainly, let's hope it gets better," says Tacoma bankruptcy attorney Dave Yando who provides proven debt solutions from his law office (http://yandolaw.com).

"Unfortunately, consumer bankruptcy filings jumped another 11 percent in Feb. 2011 over the previous month, according to the expert National Bankruptcy Research Center and the American Bankruptcy Institute," says Tacoma bankruptcy lawyer Dave Yando.

"That's right; another 102,686 American consumers filed bankruptcy in Feb. of this year," Mr. Yando acknowledges, who has 30 years experience in home foreclosure defense, and bankruptcy, real estate and taxation law.

"A still declining housing market and high unemployment are forcing individuals to seek bankruptcy relief," explains Mr. Yando, the Tacoma debt-relief attorney.

"In 2010, there were more than 1.6 million American bankruptcy filings – the highest level since 2005," writes the Tacoma bankruptcy lawyer.

Mr. Yando says foreclosure of mortgages is a major headache in finance for homeowners throughout Seattle and Tacoma, King County, and Pierce County in Washington state.

Mr. Yando provides a free initial consultation, and he explains how you can file bankruptcy and keep your home at his informative Web site: http://www.yandolaw.com/archives/270.

"Though consumers are striving to reduce their debt burden, high unemployment and a still-poor housing sector continue to fuel new bankruptcies," said Samuel J. Gerdano, the American Bankruptcy Institute's executive director in a Wall Street Journal economics blog by Sara Murray.

Mr. Yando says many people have asked him how to rebuild their credit after filing bankruptcy, which he also explains: http://www.yandolaw.com/rebuilding-creditcredit-concerns.

R ecent headlines indicate the U.S. unemployment rate has dropped to 8.9 percent as 192,000 jobs were added in Feb.

"However, other published reports indicate a leading outplacement firm states there were another 50,702 in job cuts in Feb." asserts Mr. Yando. "That's the worst job-cut number in 12 months."

Mr. Yando cites a study by Challenger, Gray & Christmas. It said the escalation represented a 32 percent increase in job cuts over Jan. of this year. That's also an increase of 20 percent from Feb. 2010.

The three reasons cited for all the job cuts: Bankruptcies, business closings and cost-cutting.

"Now, we have higher gas prices, which could affect employment rolls and the ever-increasing bankruptcy rate," says Mr. Yando.

His conclusion: "Continued high bankruptcy filings are reflective of the stalled economy."

But for financially strapped businesses and consumers, Mr. Yando's Proven Debt Solutions provide the missing piece of the debt puzzle.

13 Mexican troops charged with transporting drugs

The soldiers were arrested last week with drugs at a military checkpoint south of Tijuana, across the border from San Diego. They are being charged within the military justice system.

The Defense Department said in a statement it will "in no way tolerate" such acts.

Corruption is widespread among Mexican police, and some experts worry it could spread to the tens of thousands of soldiers assigned to fight drug traffickers across the country.

In the Pacific coast resort of Acapulco, police on Friday found the dismembered body of a man near the city's main coastal boulevard. A police statement said a car was set afire beside the body, and two handwritten signs were also found nearby.

"Here is your garbage," read one. Such signs are frequently left by drug gangs to threaten rivals and authorities.

Outside Acapulco, on the toll road to Mexico City, a man's bound, mutilated body was found near a burned-out car. The unknown victim had been shot in the face and head, and his ear was severed, according to police in Guerrero state, where Acapulco is located.

Another body that had been cut in pieces was found in three plastic bags dumped on a street in a residential area of Acapulco, police said.

Near the city's colonial San Diego Fort, meanwhile, unidentified assailants attacked three homes with gasoline bombs, gunshots and a grenade that failed to explode. No injuries were reported in those attacks.

In the northern state of Coahuila, across from Texas, a state trooper, a female passer-by and five gunmen were killed during a series of shootouts between police and presumed cartel henchmen, authorities said.

Gunmen in three sport utility vehicles attacked police in state capital, Saltillo, on Friday morning, leading to a chase and gunfight that killed two attackers and injured four officers, the Coahuila state prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Minutes later, gunmen riding in SUVs ambushed and killed a state police officer in nearby Ramos Arizpe. An hour later in Saltillo, three gunmen and a woman who was caught in the crossfire died in another shootout between police and suspected traffickers.

Prosecutors didn't say whether the three incidents were related.

Saltillo, a city of about 750,000 people near the industrial hub of Monterrey, and the surrounding area had largely avoided the worst of a wave of violence in northeastern Mexico arising from a turf fight between the Gulf drug cartel and its former hit men, the Zetas.

Frontlines hard to find in Libya's struggle

There were no signs of the rebel army, and we were getting perilously close to where the government forces were supposed to be.

In the distance we could see civilians manning the checkpoint into the town of Bin Jawad. They were not the exuberant gunmen flashing victory signs we were used to seeing in the rebel-controlled towns. There was also no sign of the flag of the old monarchy that had become the new symbol of the revolution.

Our driver quietly pulled our own rebel flag off the dashboard and began turning the car around, as it appeared we had stumbled through the lines into the latest no man's land of Libya's uprising-turned-civil war.

After a week-long stalemate, a time when rebel military gave no signs it was interested in advancing, a government strike against oil installations seems to have reignited the war in eastern Libya.

Earlier in the week, government forces from Sirte, Gadhafi's hometown and the gateway to western Libya, moved against the lightly guarded oil facilities in Ras Lanouf and Brega, which together export some two-thirds of the country's oil.

Local rebel militias, later aided by their compatriots in Benghazi, fought them off and started a push westward that has the Libyan rebel army playing catch up.

These days it can be a challenge to find the farthest limit of the rebel advance west, with every checkpoint providing conflicting information about the safety of the road ahead and the location of friendly forces.

After retaking Brega on Wednesday, rebel forces pushed out about 30 miles (45 kilometers) toward its sister oil refinery at Ras Lanouf. Army units soon followed and gave every indication they were digging in — until abruptly on Friday dozens of pickup trucks of volunteers went roaring off to the west.

"We took the army camp near Ras Lanouf last night at 7 p.m., but there were few weapons left, and the soldiers escaped," said Borawi Saleh, an oil engineer and old veteran of the Libyan army who joined rebel forces as a volunteer.

"All of the army, I am sure, don't like Moammar. They are just following orders and after a little fighting they run away," he said, explaining the victory of a rag tag mixture of professional soldiers and enthusiastic volunteers riding in trucks with machine guns bolted on the back.

There has been little sign of the creaky armored vehicles the rebel army paraded around in the eastern cities after Gadhafi's forces fled.

The rebel forces, for all their apparent disorganization and spontaneity that would seem to be disastrous for purposes of military strategy, do seem to have momentum on their side.

The swift advance and comparatively light casualties suggest that, at least for now, government troops are not offering a great deal of resistance.

"He has planes and bombs but I have a strong heart and I am defending my land," said Capt. Abdel-Hamid Ali, while his fleet of six pickup trucks pulled over at a rest stop in the grim, featureless desert.

Ali, who had no obvious rank insignia and wore wraparound sunglasses, camouflage pants, a down vest and a green army sweater, estimated that there were just 500 rebel forces involved in the push westward, but could not say when the next move would come.

"I am awaiting orders," he said, waving his ancient Nokia mobile phone in a desert country with often patchy reception.

North Africa, and especially the Libyan desert, has witnessed lightning campaigns before. In World War II, Allied and Axis forces fought years of seesaw battles across these same grim deserts, with the victors often being pushed back after overextending their supply lines.

The rebels are traveling light in their pickup trucks, but it remains to be seen if the apparent organized chaos of their advance can be sustained until the stronghold of Sirte.

The town of Bin Jawad lies almost between Ras Lanouf and Sirte and was supposed to be the limit of the army's advance. As we drove in, however, it seemed a quiet, eerie place without any of the revolutionary excitement further east.

A trailer on the edge of town was burning fiercely for no apparent reason.

Residents were shifty and just answered that the road was clear up ahead, insisting that no one had seen forces from either side.

"The people here are frightened, they are still afraid of Gadhafi," said Ibrahim al-Gouri, a Benghazi resident traveling in our car. "They would raise up the green flag if they had to," he said, referring to the Libyan government standard.

We had reached the edge of Libya's popular uprising and it was time to turn back and find the rebels.

Back in the landscaped grounds of the Ras Lanouf oil facility, whose foreign workers had been evacuated long before it became the front line, soldiers and volunteers lounged in grass, firing off occasional celebratory vollies.

They boasted about heading off immediately for Sirte or even all the way to the Tunisian border in the far west.

Ali Suleiman, a 34-year-old volunteer from Benghazi with a college degree, however, thought perhaps it was time to take a break.

"We will rest for a while and then we will advance, all the way to Sirte and Tripoli," he said, wearing mirrored aviator sunglasses, a leather jacket and an Arab-style scarf dyed different colors on his head.

The laid back atmosphere evaporated suddenly with shouted orders on a truck carrying a loudspeaker to withdraw troops to an earlier checkpoint. Cars revved up and rebels jumped into the back of pickups.

The reason soon became apparent with the sound of a jet overhead, evoking everyone's fear of the unstoppable air strike.

As our car raced back, the rebels opened up, perhaps futilely, with their heavy caliber anti-aircraft guns bolted to their trucks, against the unseen jet far overheard.

A few hours later we heard that rebel forces had finally reached Bin Jawad, and were continuing to advance.

Schemm has been reporting on the rebels in Eastern Libya for nearly two weeks.

FIFA bans players from wearing neck warmers

FIFA President Sepp Blatter said Saturday that the so-called "snoods" are "dangerous — it can be like to hang somebody."

They became popular in the Premier League this season, with Tevez at Manchester City and Nasri at Arsenal among the wearers.

After the International Football Association Board meeting at Celtic Manor in Wales, Blatter stressed that "there was not even a discussion because this is not part of the uniform."

The ban takes effect immediately.
